Wash & Care

Allbirds shoes are built for everyday movement, which means they are bound to pick up dirt, dust, and the occasional stain over time. Because they are designed to be worn often, they are also designed to be cleaned easily without compromising comfort, performance, or shape. With the right care, your shoes can look fresh again and continue to feel just as good as the day you first put them on.

Most Allbirds styles can be cleaned using a washing machine, making upkeep simple and convenient. Before washing, it is best to take a few minutes to prepare your shoes. Insoles and laces should be removed so they can be cleaned separately, and any loose dirt or debris can be brushed away using a towel or a soft brush. This helps prevent excess grime from spreading during the wash. Once prepped, the shoes should be placed in a protective bag, such as a delicates laundry bag or even a standard pillowcase, to reduce friction inside the machine.

When washing, a gentle cycle with cold water is recommended. Only a small amount of mild detergent should be used, as harsh soaps can affect materials over time. Fabric softeners and bleach should be avoided, since they may damage fibers or coatings. After the cycle is complete, excess water can be gently shaken out. Shoes should then be left to air dry in a well-ventilated area, such as near an open window, outdoors, or under a fan. Machine drying is not recommended, as heat can cause shrinkage or alter the shoe’s structure. Once dry, the shoes typically return to their original shape after a wear or two.

For those who prefer a more hands-on approach, hand washing is an excellent alternative. This method is especially useful for spot cleaning or for materials that benefit from extra care. To begin, insoles and laces should be removed. Laces can be soaked in warm, soapy water while the insoles are set aside. Using a scrub brush or an old toothbrush dipped in soapy water, cleaning can start at the soles and gradually move upward to the upper portion of the shoe. This allows tougher dirt to be tackled first while maintaining control over the process.

After scrubbing, a clean, damp cloth can be used to wipe away soap residue and loosened dirt. Laces and insoles should be rinsed separately with warm water to remove any remaining detergent. All components should then be left out to dry naturally in a space with good airflow. For quick refreshes, a sturdy wet cloth or brush can also be used to clean the surface without a full wash, which works well for mud or minor stains.

Over time, insoles may begin to hold onto odors more than the rest of the shoe. This is completely normal, as insoles absorb moisture throughout the day. To help extend the life of your footwear and keep things fresh, replacement insoles are available. These are designed to provide high cushioning and are lined with soft Merino fabric for added comfort. Swapping out old insoles can make shoes feel new again without needing to replace the entire pair.

Beyond care and cleaning, Allbirds shoes are made to support comfort throughout the day. Lightweight construction and responsive cushioning help make walking, standing, and moving feel effortless. Whether you slip them on, lace them up, or slide into them, the goal is consistent support that keeps up with daily life.

Sustainability is also woven into every step. From material selection to transportation and long-term climate goals, Allbirds works to reduce environmental impact wherever possible. Natural alternatives are used in place of petroleum-based synthetics, including wool, tree fiber, and sugarcane. These materials are chosen for their softness, breathability, and lower environmental footprint, creating products that are better for both people and the planet.

With proper care and mindful use, Allbirds shoes are designed to last, offering comfort, durability, and a lighter impact over time.
